The proff of domesticated lentils was first found on the banks of the Euphrates River in northern Syria as dating back to 8000 BC.
Lentils have been seen in lake dwellings on Peter Island in St. on Lake Biel, Switzerland in 3000 BC. Traces of its name has been found in many historical narratives and scriptures.
About half of the world's lentil production and cultivation is made by India from the 2500 BC. More than 50 different varieties are grown today.
Lentils is became popular in the West which could only reach the United States in the 16th century by Spanish and Portuguese explorers.
Today there are different varieties grown along the Middle East, North Africa and Mediterranean coasts and as far north as Germany, the Netherlands and France.
